I contributed a chapter on increasing retention through workplace gamification to the forthcoming peer-reviewed volume:
Prior research on engagement shows that engaged employees and students are more likely to remain with an organization and complete assigned tasks or studies. Although gamification includes unique mechanics and sometimes specialized outcomes, its more important function lies in its ability to increase participant engagement. Efforts that successfully increase engagement are likely to improve retention and completion outcomes.
Following the completion of peer reviews and publication of this book, I plan a qualitative study examining how much time students invest in their Personal Learning Networks outside of class. This question emerged during my doctoral research but remained unanswered.
